The Timeless Beauty of Sandstone Caves

You'll feel a sense of timelessness and respect as you explore the area around the caves

Hidden in the Pilliga National Park, a 30-minute drive north of Coonabarabran, is a stunning bush walk called Sandstone Caves. Turn onto the Yaminba Trail and head a few kilometres down a dirt road until you reach the parking area.

This easy 60-minute bushwalk was already worth it before we reached the caves. The painted orange sands, low green scrub and wildflowers are punctuated by charred black tree trunks. Before long, the track begins to circle a tall sandstone cliff that is riddled with caves. The walls of the caves have ribbons of colours and textures that make a stunning backdrop for a family photo.

This is a special place for the local Gamillerray people. It isn’t hard to imagine how Gamillerray hunters must have sheltered in these caves for many thousands of years. There are even some sites where the ancients sharpened their spears and carved footprints of the animals they found here.
